We explore the relationship between design and non-communicable disease (NCD), by highlighting how design knowledge and practice can have a direct and indirect impact on these diseases. We review the literature on the link between the physical environment (eg home environment, the workplace, the community and urban space) and NCDs. We illustrate the links and issues of design and NCDs by exploring in great detail how the design of the urban environment can play a positive role in NCD reduction.
