Proposed Research Title: Optimising the Healing Environment in the Children's Hospitals from the Perspective of Architecture and Interior Design.
Case study: Hospitals in Palestine/Nablus City.
The cornerstones of the healing environment are the building design, the arts, family support and staff attitudes inside the hospitals, but the physical components of the healing environment are the interior and the exterior of the building design, gardens, landscape, family spaces and the art collection. Environmental variables can cause or reduce stress, and in particular they can influence the psychological and physiological connection. As interior design and architecture are important to create a healing environment, my research will concentrate on the significant role of interior design and architecture in creating a healing environment in the children’s hospitals.
In Addition, the importance of this study stems from the fact that a few hospitals specialized for the treatment of children in my homeland, Palestine. Most of the Palestinian children are being cured in adults' hospital which lacks the comfortable environment that helps lessen the trepidation and worries of children during their hospitalization.
I’m researching more than fifteen disciplines, such as: architecture, interior design, interior spaces, art, colour, thematic design, healing environment, physical environment, design for children, way-findings, the function of the hospitals, the cognitive and the perception of children. All these deciplines will construct a strong infrastucture to find criteria, standards and suggestions for the macro level conducted to how we can deal and apply the interior design in the children's hospitals, particularly the public spaces inside them. On the other hand, on the micro level, the study will attempt to find out solutions and standards for the interior design concerning the children's wards in adults’ hospitals.
I’m a full time Ph.D student In LICA, with a background in architecture, Interior design and Urban Planning. Additionally, working as an architect and interior designer in a big consultation company in Palestine besides teaching as a full time at an-Najah National University, will support and helps me in my research study.
